Between Heaven + Earth: Martha Woolridge

As the holiday season approaches, my memories go back to the anticipations of my childhood, the Christmas morning opening of gifts with my immediate family, a big dinner at noon, and the visit of about 30 family members for supper on Christmas night.

I was filled with excitement and joy…and the pleasure of being with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Sometimes a few family friends were included. I remember one Christmas morning that was on a Sunday. My father and I went to church alone that day and felt the Christmas message and spirit emanate from the choir as they sang Joy to the World. One younger choir member had just become engaged and bounced up and down on her toes in the choir loft as she sang! Her life was full and she shared her joy with the congregation.

As an adult, I loved watching my children and my grandchild experience their own Christmas Day pleasures. But, the adult “me” also remembers those who are no longer here so there is sadness and loss that is also part of the day. This year is especially difficult as it is one year since my son died from cancer. In addition to hope and faith, community is ever more important. My landscape is one of people, the community around me: my family, friends near and far, my dear friends in The Bean and the larger First Presbyterian community. My community shares in my joys and gives me spiritual and emotional support in the midst of loss. My community is a manifest demonstration of God’s love. This Advent season, I give great thanks for my community.
