Memorial Gifts

A gift to the church is a wonderful way to celebrate the life and faith of a loved one. In addition to flowers, friends and family may wish to contribute to a memorial that reflects the interests of the deceased. Click here to make a Memorial Gift online. Our church offers multiple opportunities for giving:

The Memorial/Honor Fund --A gift can be made to this fund by clicking on the Online Giving button or by sending a check made out to First Presbyterian Church, stating that the gift is for the Memorial/Honor Fund and noting the name of the person being remembered or honored. The gift may be designated for a specific purpose by the donor (or the family of the deceased) and be used as an immediate gift. If undesignated, the Planned Giving and Memorials Committee will recommend a use at year-end for Session approval.

The Endowment Fund --This is a permanent fund set aside for a special purpose. None of the original principal can be spent, and the distributions from the Fund are determined annually. If given this way, the memorial/ honor gift will live on in perpetuity. A gift can be made to this fund by clicking on the Online Giving button or by sending a check made out to First Presbyterian Church, stating that the gift is for the Endowment Fund and noting the name of the person being remembered or honored.

Each contributor, as well as the honoree or the family of the deceased, receives an acknowledgement of all memorial/honor gifts. This is an important stewardship opportunity, so that you or your loved ones ministry may live on, far beyond their physical presence among us. Once a year (often in March), these gifts are dedicated in a Sunday morning service of worship.

Chancel Flowers -- The tradition of flowers in the sanctuary is a long one, going back centuries and across many denominations. According to lore and custom, the flowers represent the Living Christ, and at First Presbyterian, as well as at many churches, after the Sunday morning worship service the flowers are taken by the Deacons to the sick and grieving among us. Members of the church often donate Sanctuary flowers – poinsettias at Christmas, lilies at Easter, and chancel flowers during ordinary time – as a memorial for loved ones or as celebrations of birthdays, anniversaries, baptisms, confirmations, or other joyous occasions. They may be given quite simply to the glory of God, and in thanksgiving for blessings. They may also be given to honor the service to the church of individuals or groups (STAIR tutors, Sweat Equity volunteers, CLAMS) or to mark a public event (Martin Luther King Day). To donate flowers on any given Sunday, simply call or e-mail Sharon Wiegand in the church office to reserve the date and clarify the bulletin entry. The suggested sponsorship amount for chancel flowers is $75.00; you may mail a check or donate online or place a check in the offering, marking the date and purpose on the memo line.
